The Vancouver Province is reporting that IHIT is investigating a body found this morning near 102nd Ave and 124 Street in Surrey. Residents reported hearing a gunshot around 11 p.m. Monday. This would be 24 homicides for Surrey this year. Tragic indeed. BC Local news has a complete list.
Not to minimize the situation but after the 23rd murder in Surrey my daughter was surprised. She said I realize that's a lot but it's not nearly as much as I thought it was. I thought it was like 5 a night here in Surrey. She said knowing it was only 23 murders in one year made her feel a lot safer. I'm not sure if that's good or bad but I did find it amusing.
News 1130 is reporting that the name of the victim is Philip Oun who was known to the police.
When I first moved to the Lower Mainland I asked a few people, "What's the crime rate like around here?" They answered that it was terrible, thousands of vehicle break-ins, auto theft, etc.. I asked, "Well, what's the murder rate like?" No one knew exactly, they looked at each other and agreed it was 20 or 30 something the previous year. They didn't know why I laughed and told them they didn't even HAVE a crime rate until I explained I had been living in a major US Metro area that had over 800 a couple years previous.

DeleteThat's a really high murder rate actually.. Sure its lower then the states but that's irrelevant, its like saying, its low compared to lybia.. For Canada that's high. Surrey is a small town,so to be fair u have to judge the statist on population. U can't compare a large metro city in the US, to a small Canadian city and say,well surreys murder rate isn't so bad.. There's more homicides in Surrey then Toronto, and that's crazy! If u look at it in a fair comparison you'll see surreys murder rates are quite high.
