The Vancouver Sun is reporting that "A man who was convicted of possessing fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking and possessing a loaded firearm has been sentenced to nine years in prison. In June, Warren Brett Oswald, 37, pleaded guilty in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver to the drug and firearm offences after an unsuccessful attempt to get the evidence excluded."
He was caught with 1.4 kilograms of meth, 535 grams of cocaine, 428 g of fentanyl and $28,000 as well as a .40 cal handgun. He had a lifetime firearm ban. Oswald has 69 convictions since 1998, including five drug-related convictions and 11 violence-related convictions.
In 2013 the Brandon Sun reported that "A longtime criminal and drug courier who got caught in a car with cocaine vows to stay out of trouble from now on. Warren Brett Oswald said he plans to pursue his education while in prison and to get a job when he gets out. 'I’m going to get out of this criminal lifestyle,' Oswald told Justice John Menzies in Brandon Court of Queen’s Bench." Not. Mandatory treatment should be part of his sentence. That's the Portugal model.
I know that sound like a lot of time and for B.C. maybe it is, but that amount of meth & fentanyl, 69 previous convictions, and felon in possession of a firearm would buy him a lot more down south, in some states a habitual offender designation and basically he would not be let out until he's too old to do any more criminal activity but shoplift.
ReplyDelete30 years would be excessive. The problem in Canada is that chronic offenders do less time the more offenses they commit. This sentence is a step forward as it balances the extremes. 1.4 kilos of crystal meth is a lot as is 69 convictions.
Deletelong term incarceration doesn't solve any problems, really. it just moves them somewhere else and another set of problems are created. 30 years in jail, hell, the expensive of it is out of control. the sentence of 9 years is fine. had society invested in some of these individuals the first time, we might not be here with all those convictions later.
ReplyDeleteWe're at the point now where addicts need to start taking responsibility for their choices and stop blaming society and everyone else for the choices they make.
DeleteI would agree with that, however, there need to be services in place to assist them in over coming the addiction and the "with drawl" stage. Every one knows now that Fent. kills and is highly addictive.

But in what passes for some people's minds, the government needs to help and guide them with that. BS. The government does anything any everything less well than one or two people (like parents) working together can do it WTF do we want them involved in raising children for?

ReplyDeleteThis guy is from portage la prairie Manitoba. He’s been selling drugs since he was around 14 about time he finally got some kind of sentence! They always used to just put him away for a year or two in Manitoba!
