I just noticed that William Marsden, who co authored Julian Sher's landmark book The Road to Hell, wrote another book called Stupid to the Last Drop: How Alberta Is Bringing Environmental Armageddon to Canada (And Doesn't Seem to Care). Now that's worth reading so it is.

made me laugh, the wall between B.C. and Alberta.....
ReplyDeleteC.B.C. was reporting this morning, Canadian taxpayers subsidise corporations to the tune of $29 BILLION a year. this is the amount spent by the federal government and the 4 largest provinces. the biggest subsidizing province is Alberta. Second is Quebec.
It might be fine to subsidize a small start up or a company which needs help, which they pay back to the tax payers, but out and out subsidies not so much. As it is in Alberta the tax payers are going to be on the hook for hundreds of millions for remediating "orphaned" wells.
If Alberta has such a large number of unemployed they could use them to remediate the "orphaned" wells, by forming a Crown Corporation, which would over see it. "Send the tab to the oil companies so if they ever come back, the bill is there.
Offering low corporate tax is very different than giving them tax funded subsidies.
DeleteCorrect. One is basically smart government fiscal policy to encourage business investment, the other is the "corporate communism" you mention frequently. Collect a dollar in taxes and make you think you're getting a deal if you get $50 of it back instead of only $40.
DeleteSad to say, not all people crave freedom. The majority crave being "taken care of". This is what socialism offers in exchange for your vote, for police "protection" in place of your God given right to self defense not only against criminals but against over reaching government bureaucrats (but I repeat myself) etc., etc., etc..
