Situational awareness and the right tools available. Nothing stops a bad guy with a gun but a good guy with a gun. No telling how many lives he saved. Awesome job.
There's a saying that when seconds count, the police are only minutes away. One must be prepared to self rescue rather than counting on others. This is especially true when the focus of the others is traffic tickets rather than gun fights. There's good reason why civilian enthusiasts regularly outperform law enforcement not only in shooting competitions but also on the street, civilian enthusiasts spend more time training for it than they do, on average.
