Overdose deaths rose during BC drug decriminalization

New York Post: Memo to Mamdani: Overdose deaths surged after British Columbia legalized drugs, as pol admits ‘I was wrong’

The Western Standard is reporting that "Federal health figures confirm overdose deaths increased during British Columbia’s drug decriminalization experiment before dropping after police resumed enforcing drug laws."

"Blacklock's Reporter says Department of Health data showed overdose deaths rose 12% under decriminalization, climbing from 2,098 deaths in 2022 to 2,347 in 2024. Deaths then fell 22% to 1,841 in 2025 after police enforcement resumed."

"The new figures align with British Columbia Coroners Service statistics showing overdose deaths jumped 16.5% during the 15-month decriminalization period compared with the previous 15 months." Thankfully, no lie can live forever.

It's the same with lethal injections sites. When you increase addiction, you increase drug overdoses. When you open a lethal injection site they don;t just use drugs in that site, they use it all around that site. It becomes a free for all zone of lawlessness. The use of harmful drugs increase and as a dissect result, the number of drug overdoses increase.

It also results in the instant increase in violent crime.

Decriminalization also failed in Portland.

    1. It's funny how now they say there was a shooting but it wasn't extortion related as though that somehow makes it OK.

  3. Agreed, but another reason the numbers are down is there is simply less hard drug users out there, they are all dead. Yes there is always new ones but the feckless and asinine ideologies and policies of the NDP and Federal liberals contributed to tens of thousands dying in BC alone. So basic attrition...nice work by incompetent socialists! Unless.......that's what they were shooting for, look at MAID,,,, just saying. They had had similar program called T4 in a special little country in the late 30's and early 40's which was also very effective so who knows..

  4. I have no respect for the NDP anymore. David Eby is a complete idiot. People told him right from the start that this drug de criminalization nonsense was a rotten idea. But he refused to listen since he has selective hearing. Now all of a sudden he admits this was a mistake? It’s too late, the damage has already been done. Calling the cops on these meth heads is a joke. They just “chat them up” and “move them on.” Police are fed up of all the calls they get and it shows. Mr. Eby is the kind of person that makes a mess of everything and instead of cleaning it up, he just wipes his hands on his pants and walks away like a coward that he is. Since the province appoints the Surrey Police Board, he should get off his ass and investigate why Norm Lipinski got terminated without cause. I sincerely hope Norm files a lawsuit. The NDP shouldn’t be surprised if they lose the provincial election in a few years. Their days are numbered.

    1. Yes but just remember the BC NDP were the ones that insisted Surrey follow up on the RCMP transition. The BC Conservatives were hijacked by the RCMP so I'm not sure if they'd be as consistent with the transition.

I really don't understand how they got away with shafting Norm Lipinski. The province appoints board members as well. Decriminalization was a complete failure as is their current drug promotion which includes safe supply and lethal injection sites. That needs to change.

    2. Yes, I do agree that the NDP did the right thing by insisting that the City proceed with the transition from RCMP to SPS. That’s one good thing I have to say about them. They didn’t cater to any special interest groups like those senile old farts in the pro RCMP crowd.

    3. If the Province and the City both appoint members to the board, I don't understand how this coup took place and a long time RCMP officer is now the chair. This is why we despise the RCMP in Surrey. All these dirty tricks never end.

    4. Boy, that’s a blatant conflict of interest. The Province really needs to get involved and investigate why this happened.

    5. The mayor claims she had no idea what went on at the Police Board meeting. Yeah right. She and her stool pigeon Rob Stutt had it in for Norm since day one. I can’t wait to vote these idiots out of City Hall.

    6. The person who became the acting chair shows she was in on it.
