50th Anniversary of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
An Inquiry Into Brilliance: One Last Ride With Robert Pirsig
In the introduction to the 25th anniversary edition of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig makes some profound observations. He talks about a university class he took in the /50's about Henry James' The Turn of the Screw.
The professor talked about how a second completely different interpretation was also plausible. Robert said he had to reread the book to see it. He explains how things can be hidden from the reader if the book is written in the First Person narrative. The first person only tells you what they want you to see.
He states that in the book Turn of the Screw, the reader does not see that the governess is the villain not the hero because what the governess sees is all the reader ever sees. It's very interesting. Then he relates it to his story about Phaedrus which I obviously haven't read. It also relates to our present political climate of misdirection. History is written by the victors.
Pirsig mentions the Hollywood ending in his book and states "In the intended ending it is not the narrator who Triumphs over a villainous Phaedrus. It is an honorable Phaedrus who triumphs over the narrator who has been maligning him all the time."
"In Phaedrus's view the narrator is a sellout, a coward, who has abandoned truth for popularity and social acceptance. He sees that the narrator doesn't want to be honest any more, just an accepted member of the community, bowing and accommodating his way through the rest of the years."
"Phaedrus was dominated by intellectual values. He didn't give a damn who liked or didn't like him. He was single mindedly pursuing a truth he felt was of staggering importance to the world. The world had no idea of what he was trying to do and it was trying to kill him for his trouble. For more on the real Phaedrus, who is not a villainous ghost but rather a mild mannered hyper intellectual let me recommend Lila, a sequel that has been properly understood by a few."
Wow, Robert Pirsig wrote a sequel called Lila which examines life's essential issues as he recounts the journey down the Hudson River in a sailboat of his philosopher-narrator Phaedrus. Awesome. I just ordered it. Zen and the Art was written in 1974. That was over 50 years ago. Lila was written in 1991.
My kids are trying to teach me how to use Chat GPT. AI can be a useful tool to learn languages but it does frighten me.
Christmas Music
Christmas Reflections 2025
Something feels a bit off this Christmas and it's not what you think. I remember when my daughter was very young she casually mentioned how she could relate to the Green Day song Boulevard of broken Dreams and it broke my heart.
Sometimes life doesn't work out the way we had hoped and not until time passes can we see that it was for the best. I'm not talking about death. That's always going to leave an emptiness.
The majority of my family have passed away and that makes Christmas very different. So we do our best to try and carry on those traditions. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we fail but we always try. We always do our best.
My daughter commented on an ap that tracks your screen time and she was shocked how many hours a day she spent scrolling on her phone so she started to read books like she used to. That's a good use of free time.
So I bought two new books. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and a 501 French Verbs dictionary. I want to start sharpening up my French vocab. My kids speak so many languages, I need to improve. I admire their gift.
I always talk about the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and how it had such a profound influence on my life yet to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure if I've ever read it. Certainly not cover to cover. I usually take selected pieces and find my own hidden meaning. So this year I'm going to reread that book and reflect on what it means to me now.
I often quote the title page because I find that most significant. Yet in the introduction to the 25th Anniversary of the book I find a sincere reflection. He said instead of basking in the huge success of the book which would defeat it's purpose, he wanted to write about the book's failures and try to correct them.
As we reflect on our successes and failures in life perhaps that kind of brutal honesty will lead us to where we really wanted to go all along. He mentions the Hollywood ending of the original book and how that wasn't the original intent.
Then he adds a Zen twist and I'm like well done. As a parent all you want in life is for your kids to be happy. Setbacks occur and the road changes directions yet we do our best to keep moving forward. One time in my life I adopted the saying no turning back because it was appropriate at that time.
In Anna Nalick's song Breathe (2 AM) she states "you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable And life's like an hourglass glued to the table No one can find the rewind button, girl So cradle your head in your hands And breathe, just breathe."
"There's a light at each end of this tunnel you shout Cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out And these mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again If you only try turning around" so breathe and move forward. That's how we grow.
We shouldn't dwell on our mistakes lest we repeat them but we should recognize them so we can make course corrections in our future journey. The key is to make the course correction and forgive yourself so our mistakes don't hold us back like sandbags on a hot air balloon. Turn the helm and lift anchor.
Christmas Epiphany 2025
I don't really have a Christmas Epiphany this year but then again, of course I do. I know a lot of people out there are scared. A lot of people are discouraged and pessimistic. Some are even considering MAIDS. The cost of housing is frightening.
I'm forced to recall the Charles Dickens poem about the best of times and the worst of times and remember tough times don't last, tough people do. God hath not given us the spirit of fear but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.
I always try to look at the bright side of life. Walk in the light so to speak. My parents sent me a poster on my mission of a workhorse pulling a cart in a blizzard. The caption read when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Indeed they do.
Gentlemen may cry peace peace but the war has already begun. So let's talk about the war of words that seeks to lead men astray into slavery and captivity and let's talk about that guiding light that leads men out of darkness and captivity into the light and freedom we were created to enjoy.
At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Christ. Christ experienced sorrow. He was born in a stable. Isaiah 53 states "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not."
Psalms 118:3 states "The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner." The chief cornerstone which lays the foundation for not only the church but for our lives. The wise man built his house upon the rock.
The rock of our redeemer. That "when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall." All men can fall but if we build our lives on a solid foundation the Devil's shafts in the whirlwind will not have power over us to drag us down to the Gulf of misery.
So if we see the big picture like Elijah did, we will realize that they that be with us are more than they that be with them. There's more good people out there than bad and I don't care what religion you belong to if any.
As the title page to the book Zen and the Art of motorcycle Maintenance declares, "And what is good, Phaedrus, And what is not good. Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?” No we do not. We all know. So let's be honest with ourselves and each other. Let's use our discernment in the sea of lies to see where we want to go then head in that direction. Peace.
TPUSA is the wrong direction. Ben Shapiro is a bad man.

Grizzly bear visits Lake Louise ski run
CTV is reporting that "Skiers at Lake Louise got a reminder recently that not every bear hibernates all winter long. Parks Canada says on Saturday, Grizzly Bear 136—also known as “Split Lip”—walked from the parking lot up to the Juniper runs area. The Lake Louise Ski Club was hosting its annual Santa Slalom races at the time. The races halted." I guess.
Snow Lodge in Flin Flon, Manitoba
CTV is reporting that "A large lodge constructed entirely of snow and ice is being built in Flin Flon, with the hope of supporting winter tourism in the region. Construction of the lodge—a 56-foot-long arc with ice walls—began approximately two weeks ago inside a Flin Flon campground. It is expected to open early in the new year."
Great idea. They have lots of these at the Carnival du Quebec. Lake Louse has an ice carving festival in January.

Mudslide on Stanley Park Seawall in Vancouver
CBC is reporting that "A section of the Stanley Park Seawall has been closed after a mudslide Sunday. Vancouver's parks operations department said significant rainfall caused a "small slide of mud, rocks and vegetation," which blocked access between Prospect Point and Slhx̱Ã7elsh (Siwash) Rock."

Alberta separation referendum 2026
The Canadian Press is reporting that "Alberta's election agency announced Monday it has approved a proposed referendum question on the province separating from Canada. The question seeks a yes or no answer to: Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?"
Recently it was announced that the Supreme Court ruled a referendum on separation was unconstitutional which I thought was a bit shady. Quebec had one. Then they said they were going to hold a nonbinding referendum.
I hope Alberta doesn't separate but I think it's pretty ridiculous to claim they're not allowed to leave if they choose to do so. That's one of the reasons I delayed my move. I'm not moving to Albert if they separate.
There are actually two questions. Do you want to separate and do you want to become part of he US. The news article posted a picture from a May 3rd 2025 rally in Edmonton supporting joining the US. No offense but those guys look like straight up hillbillies. That is not the society I choose to live in.
Trump has completely betrayed MAGA and has totally become a Neo Con. The blind followers who still support that are few and far between. They don't come across as being very educated. They reflect the inbred hillbilly stereotype.
I choose the Canadian mosaic over the American melting pot. Those Ice Prisons are insane as are those oil wars. They're not very noble. Canada is far from perfect but it's better than the alternative. I like Quebec more than Alberta. Je me souviens.
Fatal Collision on Highway 1 between Langley and Surrey
Global is reporting that "One person has died after a head-on collision on Highway 1 on Monday morning. BC Highway Patrol said the first 911 call came in just after 7:15 a.m. when witnesses said three vehicles collided in the westbound lanes of Highway 1, just before the 176th Street exit in Surrey. They said it appears that one of the vehicles appears to have crossed over from the eastbound lanes and caused a head-on collision."
When I first heard it was a head on collision on Highway 1 I was wondering what on earth they were talking about. All the lanes go in the same direction. There's a huge green space between the other oncoming freeway. Well if you loo at the skid marks in the grass on the top left of the picture it looks like the car crossed over the green space and went into oncoming traffic.
Bizarre. If someone was trying to commit suicide that's no reason to try and take someone else out with you. A heart attack is possible but tragic. That was one of the few places along that freeway where it's possible to cross over into oncoming traffic. Most of the other places have an unpassable land barrier or cement dividers along the side of the road. Very sad.
Trump steals another Venezuela oil tanker
Global is reporting that "US forces stop 2nd oil tanker off Venezuela coast as Trump follows promise to seize tankers." GMAFB. BBC is reporting that "US pursuing third oil tanker linked to Venezuela, official says. US authorities have already seized two oil tankers this month - one of them on Saturday."
CBC is reporting that "Trump's Venezuela campaign was meant to target illegal drugs. Now, his motives are less clear."
Actually Trump's motives are crystal clear. He is a bully and a thief. Oil is dropping so Trump is launching another oil war to cut supply so prices will rise for his Saudi pals. Trump is the swamp.

T'was the night before Christmas and the FBI were caught lying about the Dirty News blogger
🚨🇺🇸🇮🇱 Kash Patel: “We need America to wake up and prioritize Israel.”
— Jackson Hinkle 🇺🇸 (@jacksonhinklle) December 21, 2025
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡 pic.twitter.com/lZ6FtN5LdC
Let's have a look at this crime fiction report coming from the Toronto Star. It starts off stating that "This story is based on allegations contained within the court documents that have not yet been proven in court." In other words, they're just repeating what ever ridiculous bullsh*t Kash Patel and the FBI made up.
The article states "In mid-November 2024, Ohna allegedly recruited fellow Montreal resident Tommy Demorizi, 31, to help find Acebedo-Garcia. Demorizi, who remains a fugitive, then paid fellow Quebecer Edwin Basora-Hernandez, 31, several hundred dollars for the witness’s phone number and email."
"Later, using intel from Ohna and Florez, Wedding asked one of Florez’s associates to travel to Colombia to lure the confidential witness to a location to be killed in exchange for the payment of her mortgage and cosmetic surgery, the indictment alleges."
"At one point, the documents say, Wedding paid more than $18,000 for a tool to intercept and track Acebedo-Garcia’s cellphone. He and Clark then hired someone to fly to both Medellin, Colombia, and Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to search for their target."
"It’s unclear if those attempts were successful, but on Jan. 29, 2025, Wedding allegedly managed to get his hands on surveillance footage of Acebedo-Garcia and his associate in Medellin."
"On Jan. 31, one of several unnamed individuals followed Acebedo-Garcia on a motorcycle to a restaurant inside a Medellin shopping centre. Another suspect then entered, approached Acebedo-Garcia while he was eating, and shot him in the head five times. He died instantly."
OK so absolutely none of that had anything remotely to do with the Dirty News Blogger. The bad guys already knew the name of the witness and had his picture. The FBI's fictional indictment claims the bad guys gave the Dirty News the picture.
The hitmen did not get the picture of the target from the Dirty News. Any idea how many people from Colombia read the Dirty News? Next to none. Medellin? Even less.
People from Medellin did not get the picture of the witness from the Dirty News. As I've said that picture was not posted on his website or his X account. That means even fewer people saw it on whatever fake profile they posted it on.
The FBI claim Wedding found the witness because he paid someone for the witnesse's phone number and email address. The FBI claim Wedding then paid for a tool that would intercept and track Acebedo-Garcia’s cellphone. Probably from Mossad.
So from the FBI's own evidence the Dirty News blogger is completely innocent. They claim Ryan Wedding found the witness by tracking his cell phone not from a tip from one of the Dirty News' readers. 6ademiks had nothing to do with this and the FBI's own evidence proves it. Free 6ademiks.
Martini Town 2025
We went to Martini town in Aldergrove last night. It was cute. It's a small Hallmark Christmas movie set filled with lights and music open to the public. We went last year so we knew what to expect. It feels very Christmassy despite the rain.
When we were there they had Santa, the Grinch, the Dimes and an Ice Princess. The Dimes are a peppy Christmas music trio. As we entered we saw Santa and could hear the Dimes playing. To our left was a guy dressed as the Grinch taking pictures with people. When each picture was finished he'd yell out next in a very funny Grinch voice. I said Santa, the Dimes, the Grinch, oh look there's the Ice Princess.
My daughter was like nope and started to walk away. I was looking and saw two girls with horns taking pictures and my daughter just shook her head and said trust me on this one.
I reluctantly walked away and she said those are just visitors. Have you heard of Furries? I said yeah, they didn't look furry. Their horns kind of looked like Lady Crampus. My daughters like they had tails. I was like oh wow. I don't know if it's a mental illness or not but it's sure screaming out for attention. Weird.
Christmas is kind of winding down as a somber peacefulness prevails. I really stress about the cost of housing for my kids and worry about them after I'm gone. Yet I guess the point is to enjoy the time that we do have because soon it will be gone.
I liked sitting by the fire embracing the ambulance of the lights and music. Between sets of live music they had recorded Christmas music playing and Joni Mitchell's song River came on. Coasting through Christmas embracing the peace.

The Budget that Quietly Rewrites our Lives
2025 Year End Conspiracy Review
Leslyn Lewis just put out a profound Substack talking about the subtle changes in this federal budget which reflect huge concerns. As we know, this budget was twice the forecasted debt after the last twice the forecasted debt budget Chrystia Freeland was supposed to resign over.
The selling point was less spending and more investment. That's just a sneaky way of saying more spending because it doubled the forecasted already doubled debt.
Leslyn Lewis points out that "For most of our history, infrastructure meant something we could see: a bridge, a road, a water system, a public building. These investments were visible and understandable. This budget implicitly redefines that idea by directing enormous resources towards a new infrastructure: the digital systems that will increasingly shape how Canadians live and how government operates."
She talks about how hidden terms reflect significant changes to how the government controls our civil liberty. So we have two problems on the table. The use of AI and digital technologies to erode and over ride the Charter of Rights in the name of progress and more massive spending that is unsustainable.
The Neo Con answer to the uncontrolled spending is to raise the age of retirement and get rid of social security for seniors. They are purse snatchers who want to rob little old ladies to fill their greedy pockets and gain more power and control over voters. I have always said we don't need to go from reckless spending to reckless cuts. We need to reduce the reckless spending first. We need to make a course correction so we go in the right direction not the wrong direction and end up lost.
We need to be a boat with a rudder not a leaf in the stream so we can steer our own course in life. We also need to look where we are going. We need a metaphorical sextant. A navigational tool to make sure we are going in the correct direction so we arrive at the correct destination. We need to see through the barrage of lies so we don't end up lost at sea.
