Global is reporting that "South Korea’s new President Lee Jae-myung vowed Wednesday to restart dormant talks with North Korea and bolster a trilateral partnership with the U.S. and Japan, as he laid out key policy goals for his single, five-year term." New president? Say what?
Remember that crazy coup where the former president declared martial law because he dropped in the polls? He surrounded parliament with the army and wouldn't let any of the opposition members of parliament in to vote. I kid you not.
The elected officials fought past the army, got into parliament and overturned the martial law decree by an actual vote. After that stunt people were talking about impeachment for quite a while which finally happened. A new election was held and someone else was elected.
Prior to the crazy coup attempt, the former president Moon Jae-in met with Kim in the North just prior to Donald Trump's visit to meet Kim in the demilitarized zone. The previous North Korea president had also met with Kim at Heaven's Lake in the far north. Kim even held a parade when the public welcomed the South Korean president with open arms.
That is diplomacy at it's finest. The president after him, the one that tried the crazy coup, threw that all away. When people objected he claimed foreign interference and used that to justify his mentally deranged coup against democracy. So now the new president is back on track and the CIA's foreign interference can take a back seat. Blessed are the peacemakers.
"Peace is always cheaper than war." The first step in peace is lifting the sanctions and fertilizer ban in North Korea so they can feed their people. That would be an act of good faith.
