Why Alberta is considering severing ties with the RCMP

CBC is reporting that "One of the major bullet points emerging from Premier Jason Kenney's speech in Red Deer on Saturday was a proposal to establish a provincial police force. If the measure were to find support, Alberta would join Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador as the only provinces to operate a provincial police force outside of the RCMP. Like much of what was announced Saturday, establishing a provincial police force is part of a bigger strategy to give Alberta greater autonomy from Ottawa."

More autonomy and better fiscal responsibility aren't the only reasons provinces are ditching the RCMP. It's to overcome RCMP corruption and reinstate law enforcement.

  1. It's about time Canadians got "states rights". Government is better when it's closer to the people it serves. Centralized authority is a magnet for control freaks and other deficient personalities. When you hear someone say they want a career in public service, a lot of the time that your first warning that they are exactly the wrong kind of person for the job. Those who are attracted to power are the wrong ones to wield it.

  2. trailrunner - that is a pretty broad brush you are using to paint folks who are public servants. Some tweaking might be considered here. For example, I was a fire fighter in a large city for thirty plus years. I was never interested in being a control freak. It was and remains to be a good career choice. Yes I made a difference, I worked hard and took it seriously. For most fire fighters the rainbow at the end of your career is a pension plan that you paid into for all of that time.

  3. State Police can also be controlled by the state politicians and given what passes for law in some parts of the U.S.A. they might as well give it a pass all together.

As to Kenny wanting a "provincial" police force, my take on it would be, it isn't about autonomy but rather his desire to control everything. Expect it to be stacked with political appointees, just as Ford did try in Ontario, but wasn't successful. in my opinion Kenny is just like any Taliban type, except he's more like those Christian Taliban types in the U.S.A.

    1. You really need to get over your hate for religion. Jason Kenny is a d*ck but come on. Maybe that's something for Dr Phil to sort out.

    2. Don't be hating religion because the mass media portrays certain types in order to control public opinion.

For example, while most Blacks in the Southern USA are potrayed as some type of evangelical Baptists, the truth of the reality is the vast majority of them are Catholic.

      A bit of interesting history:

    3. What on earth does that have to do with anything? I was determined to close comments to this blog completely after the Remembrance Day fiasco because these conversations are absolutely meaningless but I thought I'd give it one more chance. These conversations convince me that keeping the blog open to comments is a complete waste of time.
