Crown withdraws criminal charges against Toronto cops accused of planting heroin
The Toronto star is reporting that "Four Toronto police officers walk away from more than two dozen perjury and obstruction-of-justice charges" over trial delays caused by information sharing problems between prosecutors and Toronto police professional standards, the unit that conducted an internal investigation that led to the charges. The police screwed up their own disclosure obligations so the cops charged walked.
Const. Michael Taylor, Const. Benjamin Elliot, Const. Jeffrey Tout and Det.-Const. Fraser Douglas walk away now, but what we do in life echos in eternity. Word.

Happens both ways. Sad but in all honesty and protection of our judicial system it has to be impartial. The public now knows who these corrupt cops are. Early retirement with no pension should be forthcoming.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. The right to a speedy trial is important. It's just kind of sad it gets thrown out when they were the ones that caused the delay by refusing to disclose evidence.
DeleteInteresting if that is true but past rulings have established defence has no argument for delay when it was themselves whom had predominantly created the referenced delay.
DeleteCorrect. That's what makes this case conflicted.
DeleteThis is not the first time a case in which there was a major public interest got thrown out for this reason. It's one of their main "go to" strategies, the longer they can delay, the better outcome for high profile drug or cop corruption cases. For the drug dealer or the cop that is. Not so much the public, but who GAF about them, right? Oh that's right, not even the public themselves. And so it goes....
ReplyDeleteAll four of those cops out to be taken out and beaten within an inch (pardon me, a mm) of their lives. Fucking disgusting that scum like that can wear a badge.
