Harry Hiscock and the Red Jacket
OK I guess we need to talk about this. I wanted to start a new thread for this conversation because I want to give the guy a fresh start. Someone sent me a link to that Stand up if you've had enough song and I said awesome so I posted it. It's a very timely and insightful song.
Someone else posted a link in the comments to a claim on Reddit that states: "PSA: Mr. Esquimalt (AKA Harry Hiscock) is a former local gang leader who attacked & paralyzed an innocent teen for wearing a red jacket in 2001. Hiscock received an 8-year sentence and was fully paroled in 2008." OK that was 23 years ago. He was 19 years old. What has he done since?
Anybody can make an anonymous post on a forum. Let's review the facts. In 2002 CBC reported that "A 20yearold man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for viciously attacking a Vancouver Island teen because of the colour of his jacket. The victim has been in a semicoma ever since. Harry Hiscock was found guilty of aggravated assault by a B.C. Supreme Court jury last week. Hiscock was one of three people involved in the attack of Nicholas Johnson in Esquimalt last year. Johnson was attacked for innocently wearing a red jacket, considered a rival gang colour by Hiscock and his friends." There's a little more to it than that.
I'm not going to minimize, rationalize or condone what he did. What he did was stupid and ended in a complete tragedy but in all fairness I think we should dive a little deeper to put the matter in perspective. Someone made a short documentary about the tragedy called the Red Jacket.
The website for the documentary claims Nicholas Chow Johnson was walking home drunk shortly after 3:00 am on Saturday, October 20, 2001 when a group of drunk kids confronted him.
A sixteen-year-old boy gave Nick a shove, then Harry punched him in the head. "Nick dropped like a stone, slamming his head on the roadway. A 16-year-old member of the gang then delivered at least one finishing kick to Nick's head, as he lay unconscious on the road."
OK that was nasty. Curb stomping someone when they're on the ground is really f*cked up. It had a tragic end. The kid received brain damage. It's like how Spike's niece was paralyzed from a stray bullet in the Kelowna Jonathon Bacon shooting. That was horrible.
It reminds me of the Michael Levy swarming. Michael Levy was left quadriplegic at age 18 after being attacked with a hatchet at a Halloween dance at Tynehead Hall in 2006. A bunch of guys swarmed him, then when he was on the ground some whack job pulled out an axe and hit him in the head with the axe when he was on the ground. That was really f*cked up. So we need to starting thinking about the consequences of the stupid sh* we do when we're young.
Harry Hiscock's co-accused were the Delalcazars. So they were all a bunch of little sh*ts when they were kids but what are they now? At some point we all have to grow up. His new song is a step forward. On that we can agree. We all have a blank page in front of us. What we put on that page is up to us. We can all see what's happening to Canada and we can all agree something needs to be said. Justin Trudeau has got to go. Blaze's Liberal spam is mentally deranged.

Well no matter what this guy does for the rest of his life he'll always be responsible for ruining this kids life and his family's life. I was big on his video before I learned of this. No way I can support him now it's just impossible and it's a shame as his message is very good. I'm surprised you actually promoting him Dennis. I get it on one hand but at the end of the day after what he did was despicable no getting around it.
ReplyDeleteI understand. The whole point of my blog has been to encourage people to leave the gang life behind. My father did a lot of work with the prison alternatives committee in Matsqui. Someone made a colossal mistake 30 years ago now what?
DeleteA lot of us have gotten in fights for stupid reasons over the years. When you get in a fight you don't really have the intent of killing someone or maiming them. There was another young man from Victoria who got in a bar fight late at night. He threw one punch, the guy went down and hit his head on the way down. Tragically he died. Did the guy really intend to kill him? I don't think so. No one can go back and undo what happened but we all have a choice as to what we do in the future.
I'm not really promoting him. Someone sent me a link to a song and I thought it was very timely. Someone else sent me a link to his past and I thought wow, how tragic. Somewhere I read he claimed that he went through an very angry time in is life when he was young. After his son died when he was 18 and he turned to alcohol. He claimed after the night of the assault he quit drinking completely.
Curb stomping is something else. Hitting someone in the head with an axe when they are on the ground is messed up. He didn't do that. Someone else did. I think it's important to look at the story and see how tragic it was so we can think twice before making the same mistake.
Harry was a leader of esqumalt crips gang I don't know if the crips still around in esqumalt but back the late 90s early 2000s thay had around 50 members I always wondered how the bloods and crips came to Victoria bc also u never hear about the bloods crips in the lowermainland .
ReplyDeleteI guess that's something else we should talk about because it's bullsh*t. There are no Crips or Bloods in BC and there never was. The Crips and Bloods are black gangs from LA. When I was with the Guardian Angels in Seattle back in the /80's we'd see Crips and Bloods networking north from LA and the Vice Lords and Disciples networking West from Chicago. All four were the strictly black gangs. The only exception would be the Driftwood Crips the Edmonton Angels hired in Surrey recently who are Somalians from Toronto but they don't walk around with blue bandanas any more. They don't have big ass afros anymore either.
DeleteWhen I was in New York the cops there had gotten rid of most of the gangs. Every time a gang went out in colours the New York cops would harass them so they stopped wearing colours. Gangs in LA survived and thrived because they didn't wear patches. They just wore coloured clothing. Usually a blue or red bandana. In the /90's when my kids were in school you'd occasionally see a white yuppie kid walking around with a blue or red bandana sticking out of their back pocket. These were posers. Idiots who thought it looked cool. They were social rejects.
If Harry and the the Delalcazars were walking around with bule bandanas when they were kids then they were posers copying the Crips they were in no way affiliated with them. Back in the day I hated the Crips. They were skinnery crack heads. The Bloods were a bit bigger and calmer because they sold pot which gave them the munchies. I don't know maybe it was because our colours were red and white. I always got in fights with Crips in Seattle. I was never in LA.
Tacoma Washington hill top area had the crips who moved there in late 80s from Los Angeles I heard Tacoma was dangerous in the late 80s 90s but has gotten alot better
ReplyDeleteIn Tacoma that's quite possible because they have a large black community there like South Seattle. Things were worse then because of the US crack epidemic in the /80's. Canada is just a bit slower to catch on to a bad thing. We have it now along with crystal meth and fentanyl.

DeleteWow. Give it up for the Rangers.
DeleteWow! That is a crazy story! Go Rangers!
DeleteThe Crips or Bloods were never solidified here but they tried, back in the day there was a well known dealer called Piffty who came into town and was bringing in a lot of crack when it was new in the early 90's late 80's. He brought a few of his boys with him but they eventually got run out. Other than a few cases like that they would occasionally come into town to trade coke for BC bud. Back then the HA were way more racist and would not put up with that kinda competition unless they were working for them. There also were a few native gangs that adopted the Crip / Blood names but had no real connect with them. Toronto is a different story i.e Little Man etc that's why he has the x2 by his nic as it signifies an alliance with the "Neighborhood Crips" as well as the "Rolling 0's" sets, both of which are LA based.
DeleteThat is simply not true and I'm not going to argue about it. Montreal has a large black community. Through Greg Wooley Mom Boucher and the Hells Angels supplied all the Crips in Montreal with drugs. The Crips in Montreal were not HA rivals. They worked for them. The Delalcazars sold drugs outside Victoria and hated the HAs. They were in that sense HA rivals. They arbitrarily chose the name Crips but had absolutely no affiliation with them.
DeleteNot true about what? I'm talking about BC. And these are facts, everything I said is accurate. I have no idea what they do In Montreal, Also yes those clowns in Victoria had 0 to do with actual crips.
DeleteI'm saying that any claims that the Crips or the Bloods were on Vancouver Island are untrue. As you say, those kids in Victoria had nothing to do with the real Crips. They were just a few suburban wannabes. Harry is white and the Delalcazars aren't even Latino. They're Filipino so no legitimate ties to the real Crips who are a black gang.
DeleteAs for the other comment, yes I did hear about Voldemort thanks.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree with ya Dennis, WE have all done some Bad choices in our teen years but violence is not a “mistake” - young or not. Violence comes from another segment than being a “teenager.” I doubt Harry is “living” everyday with the guilt and shame of what he’s done. I don’t see him making amends with the victim by “helping” him in anyway. Out of sight-out of mind.
ReplyDeleteOkay as a local and know this losers history and reputation, I have to set the record straight. 1. He was never the leader of anything. 2. He continued to push a tough guy image after his release from prison. 3. No one takes him or his rap career serious.
