Police Misconduct Study

Recently I was speaking with a former prison guard who referred to a US study where women were more likely to be sexually assaulted dating a cop then a civilian. He said everyone in the industry here in Canada knows about it but they don't talk about it because the public is supposed to have confidence in law enforcement. Although I haven't found the study yet I have found many similar studies that raise a valid concern about blind faith in anyone. Everyone needs to be accountable. Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Although most of the links are to studies in the US, we know the problem is here in Canada as well. Both class action sexual harassment laws suits as well as the RCMP bullying class action law suit is the tip of the iceberg. Dianne Rock was gang raped on the Pickton Farm. Gang raped means more than one perp. She was gang raped by bikers and cops. This will not go away. Everyone needs to be accountable. Including the police.

Police Have a Much Bigger Domestic-Abuse Problem Than the NFL. "The National Center for Women and Policing cites two studies that found that at least 40% of police officer families experience domestic violence, in contrast to 10% of families in the general population."

  1. Don't know about the study, but back in the 1970s it was fairly well known that if you were a female married to a male cop, you had a higher chance of being beaten by your spouse. In one detachment, of 10 RCMP officers, 8 admitted they had hit their wives, one said--none of your business, and one said he didn't. My friend, left her husband, the RCMP officer.

Back in those days wives were considered just part of the establishment. If your RCMP husband was stationed in a small two cop town, you lived at the station and the RCMP officer's wife was expected to cook the meals for any prisoner in the local jail. If an RCMP officer's wife couldn't hack the new assignment's location, they wouldn't even consider transferring him until after his wife and kids had left. That is why the RCMP has needed a Union since the get go. the mentality of the RCMP really hasn't changed since those days. Doesn't matter what they say, their actions speak louder than their words.

These men would go to work each day and their word was law, they'd come and a wife would talk back. they didn't appreciate that........

In my opinion there needs to be greater psycbological testing of people who work as police officers, in jails, etc and in some positions they need to be rotated out, so they maintain their sanity.

    1. I agree. I had no idea how common the problem was. The kind of people who covet power like that tend to commit sexual assault. I always found it baffling because law enforcement were supposed to defend women not abuse them.

    2. That is the problem, they don't see it as abuse. They see it as their right or they just don't see. some people can divide their lives into compartments, they don't connect one thing to the other or as a family member once told their wife, his mistresses had nothing to do with their marriage. She thought it did, and left.
